Hi,
I work for a school district and as you can imagine we have many pcs. Over
the summer we update the computers and run regular maintenance, this includes
ensuring the anti-virus definitions are updated as well as any Microsoft
Updates. The bulk of the computers are Dell GX-150 running WD-100 IDE drives.
The applications are all the same, all computers have Windows XP running on
NTFS. Here is my problem.
After running the Windows updates from the Microsoft site I have several
computers that work fine and one or two that do not work. They bootup and
when they reach the Windows XP splash screen, reboot. If I take the drive out
of the computer and install it into another Dell GX-150 as the D: driver, the
computer will immediately run CHKDSK on the D: drive when it boots. Usually
after doing this I am able to take the drive and replace it into the original
PC and it will boot.
When it does bootup, I find I can not move any icons on the desktop, I also
receive a "Hardware Installation" dialog pop-up message stating that "The
software you are installing for this hardware - 'Generic Volume' - has not
passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP".
This is a computer that had worked without any problems previous to the
updates being performed. There are several other quirks such as the toolbar
being partially hidden until you make a change to it.
Can someone please shed some light on these problems. I would hate to have
to rebuild hundreds of drives from scratch. Is there an easy solution? Why
does this corruption happen after running the updates? What causes this?
Thank you for your help.
