nvidia 6600 beta 2 upgrade from mce 2005 settings/driver problem

I was running MCE 2005 and upgraded to Vista Beta 2 and now I cannot change
the display settings, I get a message that says the display drivers are for a
previous version of windows… so I went into add/remove programs and
uninstalled the nvidia drivers. After reboot I was left with a standard VGA
driver so I downloaded the Vista drivers from the nvidia website, version
88.61 and installed them. I has the same problem after reboot. I have since
removed the nvidia MCE extensions from the add/remove programs applet, but
yet still the same message when I try to change the display settings.

Now, there is no longer an option in add/remove programs to uninstall the
nvidia drivers. I then went into the device manager and uninstalled the
drivers that way, rebooted, windows loaded the standard VGA drivers and I
tried installing the new drivers again. I get the same message when I try to
change the display settings.

Should I remove the pure video decoder too? Is there a way to completely
remove all traces of the nvidia drivers to try again?

My hardware is as follows: P4 3.2 ghz, 1024 pc3200 ram, Intel D965perl mb,
ICH5 raid 0, Nvidia 6600 agp 128m. I had the latest nvidia drivers for MCE
version 81.98 and the nvidia pure video decoder version 1.02-196, I was
originally using the DVI port on a plasma display but during the upgrade I
hooked up a VGA monitor to the VGA port because nothing was showing on the
plasa display.

Any Ideas?

See the nvidia readme, which has a change-the-date-
in-the-inf-file trick. I suppose that might be it.

Thanks, just tried that but it too didn't work. I also removed the pure video
decoder, but still no fix.

The exact message I get is: “The currently selected graphics display driver
can not be used. It was written for a previous version of windows and is no
longer compatible with this version of windows. The system has started using
the default VGA driver."

Part of the driver must be working as the resolution is at 1024 x 768, but
it won't detect the DVI monitor, only the first RGB monitor.

Yeah, I read someone trying that tip too and
it not doing anything. Me, I picked up a cheap
ATI (fanless 9600) since the 6200 agp had a major
cpu-use spike problem (80% of each second it
was busy using ms's nvidia driver; 20% of each
second busy (as in everything frozen) using
nvidia's nvidia driver). The ATI runs fine.

The 1024x768 may be the stock, unaccelerated
driver working. Anyway, I don't know since
I never saw that problem. That may have been
because I installed to a new disk each time (I
installed several times, 32 and 64 versions).
I know that when I ran the stock driver I didn't
have the cpu-use spike that I did with the nvidia
driver(s).

Who you gonna call? Lots of dead ends in this.
It wouldn't be a problem if it weren't d-day
minus five months. The overlords have much
work to do.

After a lot of troubleshooting, I found that the problem is only happening
when I plug in my plasma TV, which is my main display on the 2nd port (DVI).
It seems that is what kicks off the problem. Without it connected the analog
VGA display is fine and I can change the display settings. I don’t know if
it’s because the plasma is the second display, or if it’s a compatibility
problem with the current nvidia drivers.

I have the same issue. I am using a DVI to HDMI cable for the digital diplay.
My Nvidia control panel only has 2 options, 3D settings and display settings.
The video just starts blinking if I try to make a change. In the Windows
display settings it gives the same error about an older version of windows.

Hey PwLn,

I found on the web that other people have the same problem also. It seems
that it is an nvidia driver’s issue. I guess we'll have to wait for driver
updates. In the mean time, I started using the SVGA port, bad resolution for
windows, but bearable for the media center part, which is what I mainly use
that pc for. Only problem is, I now find out that I have a sound issue in the
media center portion of windows, no sound.

By the way, every time I post, I get an error message saying there was a
problem, I look and don't see my post, so I repost, get another error, but
the post shows up. That's why there are double posts. I wish there was a way
to remove the doubles.
