NVIDIA driver update problem

Today the auto update installed the following Video driver update:

Microsoft Corporation - Video - NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420
nVidia driver version 52.16

After the update and the computer was restarted, my screen resolution
dropped to 640 X 480 and is now stuck there. I tried doing everything the
troubleshooting guide suggested, but nothing works and I can not increase the
resolution or color quality above the minimum setting. Also, I installed a
real player 2 update two days ago and I do not think I restarted the PC then,
so that might be it. However, since the MS update was for the video driver I
suspect that this caused the problem. I am running Windows XP Home Addition
SP2.

While it is possible, it is extremely unlikely Real Player 2 had anything to
do with this.

A few things to try:
1. Go to the video card/computer manufacturers website and get the latest
video driver for your card.
2. System Restore to date/time before this started:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Select date/time.

In the future do not get Driver Updates from Windows Update.
Instead get the drivers directly from the manufacturer.

No, if it is a Dell computer you should get all drivers from Dell.
There are a few exceptions:
1. You added hardware from a source other than dell and in that case you
should get the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
2. You are experienced enough to be able to get drivers from other sources,
example: Dell may furnish a video card originally manufacturer by ATI, it
you know what you are doing, sometimes an ATI driver may work.

Thank you. I did a little more looking and it seems that windows update
installed a 2003 NVIDIA driver according to their own history file (52.16 is
a 2003 release according to the NVIDIA website). I downloaded the REAL latest
driver, 84.something I think) released yesterday and everything is fine now.
You are right, I have now learned not to trust windows update (or is it
downdate?) for drivers. Thanks!!!
