Nvidia / Windows XP Automatic Update problem

I am running the home version of Windows XP on a desktop PC. Other than the
two updates below, I am current on all critical updates and have installed
SP2.

A few days ago, I got a notification that a new Windows update was available
and clicked on the update icon. I was later notified that it was available
for installation. I again clicked on the update icon and selected automatic
install.

The two update items were:

Nvidia Corp. Sound - NVIDIA n Force Audio Codec Interface
Nvidia Corp. Sound - NVIDIA n Force MCP Audio Processing Unit

I watched the install process.

The first item looked like it installed ok. When the second item was well
into the installation process, my PC did a reset and rebooted itself. I
should mention that the only other time I can remember an unexpected reset
was when I tried to install a defective card about a year ago.

As far as I can tell, my PC is still working fine. However, I keep getting
notified that the same updates are available. If I try to install them I am
notified that the installation failed.

I would appreciate some advice on what to do next.

Thanks!

Same problem, Windows XP pro, no reset, though.

It just won't install the updates, or any other updates through windows
update show the same error. 80246005. NVidia was the first.

I've installed other updates on the same system. No idea.

I've posted a similar problem on 29/4/2005: an offer to install the update
repeated every time I start the computer, followed by an "Installation
Failed" box if I accept the offer to install. I don't have any idea what to
do about it either but you're DEFINITELY not alone. My update is

Nvidia Corporation - Sound - NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) Audio Codec Interface

Microsoft seem good at (sporadically) posting replies here so let's hope
they do it for us eventually. For me, I'd be quite happy if I knew how to
remove that waiting-to-be-installed update and arrange for it not to be
downloaded again.

I've just run Windows Update from the Start menu - asked it to show all
updates (not express installation, in other words). It said there was
nothing available. Then I shut down.

Now I've started up the computer again and this time there's no offer to
install this rogue update. So either it got installed somehow in the end or
the Windows Update did the trick. Don't know which.
