Hi,
I thought I could share my experience with WindowsUpdate and
Error 0x80244022 and 0x801901F7.
To access the Internet we have to go through a proxy server (Squid). Every
attempt to bypass the proxy is blocked by the firewall and redirected to
an internal webpage telling the user to use the proxy server.
I had some problems with a Windows 2000 server and WindowsUpdate. Neither
manual nor automatic update worked on this server, and everytime I took a
look at the log, I found Error 0x80244022 and 0x801901F7. Searching the
net got me nowhere. What I observed when trying manual update was that I
could get a list of available updates, but every download attempt failed.
The parts of WindowsUpdate responsible for finding which updates are
needed worked as supposed. The parts responsible for downloading
(wuauclt.exe? BITS?) failed everytime, not even accessing the proxy
server. Different proxy settings through Internet Explorer and proxycfg
were tried out, but no luck.
After checking the firewall and proxy logs, it looked like the parts
responsible for downloading the updates, tried direct access first but was
blocked the firewall and served the internal webpage. That caused
confusion and failure to download. When I removed to redirect and let the
firewall just reject the direct access attempt, everyting started to work
as supposed.
It seems to me that a response back such as a redirect to an internal
webpage is enough to stop any download attempt. As long as an answer is
received, no attempts to access the proxy server are tried.
OT: I had some similar problems with SUS (haven't migrated to WSUS yet),
which I solved by other means.
Hope this information is of some help.
