to MS and download the Windows Update (Fix Q290700). When
I search for it I can not find it. Can anyone help me
please...

Note that installing the patch WILL reset System Restore, and you'll lose
all existing Restore points.
What makes you think you may need it??

Noel what if my system restore has been disabled due to viruses and trojans
being removed from my computer? Do I have to fix the Q290700 or can I just
install Media Player 9 without fixing it? If I choose not to fix will I have
other problems?

The WMP install is specifically designed to require a functional System
Restore, as it's the only way that you can uninstall WMP9 from Win ME.

If you read the instructions on your AV, they state that you should
re-enable the System Restore function after your system is clean.

If you are using NAV, then disable it before attempting to install ANY
software - especially from Windows Update!!

It wasn't NAV that found the trojans it was my local computer repair shop
that found and removed them, they are the ones that disabled the System
Restore when I advised them that they disabled it, they tell me they have to,
to keep them from coming back???? I just wonder if this is why I cant
download IE6 from the critical updates as well. Well I will re-enable the
System Restore and try that but should I disable NAV from msconfig or just
disable from the icons on the screen? thank you for all your help

To install IE6 with NAV present on the system you need to either
1) Uninstall NAV (and all associated programs), then install IE6, then
reinstall NAV
2) boot to Safe Mode and install IE6 from there.
or
3) perform a 'Clean boot' and try installing IE that way.

Disabling System Restore has NOTHING to do with 'preventing viruses coming
back' - and a lot to do with the poor understanding of the techie involved.
No knowledgeable user would reset (note, NOT disable) System Restore until
after the system was clean - although most AV companies like to advise that
SR be disabled during the cleaning process (mostly because they're too lazy
to program around the fact that they can't remove infected files from the
archive) so that users don't see 'false positives'.

The ONLY way you can be reinfected from System Restore is if you restore the
system to a point during which the PC was infected in the first place - and
it's frequently not necessary to even reset SR to clear the system of
infected points, if the 'normal procedures' are applied during and after the
cleanup. (creation of Restore points at all stages, coupled with a full
Windows Update session or three, and other cleaning procedures).

The most that may be required in XP is the 'remove all SR points but the
last one' option.

Noel I am not using XP I have ME and they did not reset Sytem Restore they
actually Disabled it ... when I right clicked on the my computer icon and
try to enable it, it asks me to restart the computer for the changes to take
effect. so I went back to check to see if System Restore was enabled and the
box to disable it is still checked.
I think my computer is possessed

The last time I had the computer serviced due to the trojan problems I had
to take it back to them because NAV was all screwed up... I tried to
uninstall NAV like the Symantec web site suggested and couldnt get NAV to
download so I ended up taking the computer back to where I had it serviced,
they got that up and running and I am a little leary of unistalling NAV and
all of its components for fear of all the same problems as before...

When you say clean boot explain that in detail for me please
Thank You again
