October patches cripple computer

I am running XP Pro SP2. After installing the October patches...

*Windows Explorer search function does not run, either from Start Menu or
from within Explorer.
*Non-administrator accounts will not display Explorer, Start Menu, or
Windows Taskbar.
*Windows Explorer takes a few seconds to do things that it previously did
near-instantly.
*Windows Antispyware will not run.
*Windows Installer will not run. Already tried re-registering and
re-installing Windows Installer, but this did not fix the problem.
*When attempting to use Windows Update to get my update history, I get the
0x800A0046 error, and none of the suggested resolutions fix the problem.
*Windows Add/Remove program list no longer lists any Windows patches.

Suggestions, anyone?

I have WinXP SP2. When I installed all the updates today my IE was screwed
up. There were no drop down memu items on top toolbar showing but they would
drop down if I scrolled over them, my start menu lost all its small icons,
any folders I went to showed icons only and I could not change it back to
list like I normally have them, and a few other things were "changed" I don't
remember. So after reading the posts here, I UNINSTALLED all of the days
updates ( I had 8 of them) and then reinstalled one by one (this time with my
AV off) except I did not reinstall KB896688( only downloaded and saved it).

What I finally did was went to KB896688 on MS downloads site and then DL it
from there to SAVE and then decided to try it again installing from my own
computer and now my IE and computer all works fine. I also made sure I had
my AV
disabled this time when saving it and when installing it with nothing else
running or open. I think what happened when trying to DL all 8 from WIN
Update something got corrupted in the process of DL or installation.

If you scroll down here on this discussion board you will see many folks are
hainvg all sorts of problems with this months updates from MS especially I
think if you try to take them all from the WIN Update site usuing Express and
doing all of them at once.

Start/Control Panel/Add Remove Program. Tick where it says "Show Updates" at
the top right of the window. Click on the update and then on remove.

OR you run a SEARCH for Files. If so then>>> Look for the updates from
today
KB896688, 904706,905414,905749,901017,900725,902400 and 890830(but this one
you can't uninstall). Put it in the "All or part of file name" window and it
will bring up the "uninstaller" for that update. Right clcik on it and OPEN
it and follow instructions. Preferably maybe do one at a time on the search
and start with 896688 as it has casued most of the problems it seems.

When you unistalled 896688 was your system back to normal? Mine was. That's
when I went the route of dl and saving and then installed later. Also go to
the Windows catalog and get it rather than thru Win Update.

Yes, when I uninstalled 896688 everything was good again. I will try the

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure whether this will work since Windows
Installer is no longer working, but I'll try this. I'm going to be away from
my computer for the next few hours but I'll try your suggestion when I
return.
Thanks again.

Did you try saving it first to your computer and later installing it? Be
sure all programs and other windows are closed and just RUN it from where you
saved it. Also be sure yur Anti-virus program is disabled. You do not need to
be connected to your DSL or Dial up or anything. Just install off your saved
DL. Did you mean that it was a no go for you becasue it STILL fouled up your
system when you installed 896688 again after uninstalling it?

yes

Yes, I disabled Norton. I even stopped some services. IIS, SQL 2000 Dev, SMTP.

Correct. For me, what I have noticed right away is it breaks COM in IE.
Windows Update breaks also due to this. It tells me I don't have windows
update software, To click above on the yellow bar to download it, however
never presents the download.

Also, Outlook 2003's Outlook Today page items appear for a second or two
then disapear.

Removing 896688 fix's these symptoms the 4 or so times I have tried to
install it from different MS download areas.

You guys are brave. Or maybe foolish. Is there a difference when deciding to
jump on a slew of updates the day they're released? It often pays to wait
until the end of the week or so to see how things pan out for others and to
give MS a chance to slipstream in necessary fixes.
