What can be done if I purchased a New PC - that I paid extra ($200) to
receive Win-XP Pro (SP2), and the system builder claims not to be able to
help with updates that don't seem to work on the Microsoft Update site (e.g.
updating Movie Maker 2.0 to 2.1)? All the Microsoft Update FAQs seem to
indicate only that updates happen automatically (with no references to any
possible shortcomings or "locked down" software versions with OEM OS
versions). What are the facts concerning this? The OEM said that it is "out
of their hands" (that the Microsoft Update site failed to acknowledge that
the installed version of Movie Maker was out of date. Both Microsoft and the
OEM point to each other concerning OS applicaiton support issues. Please
help.

To me, if you paid an extra $200 you should have received a full, retail
version of XP pro, not an OEM version.

Go here: http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showforum=89 and downlaod the
latest AutoPatcher for XP; it should have many of the updates you need. (It
is a 200+Mb file)

Well, you could get a valid WinXPpro sp2 OEM CD for $142.98
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16837102062

It sounds like getting the $200 refunded from your system builder would
not be the easiest thing you ever did. I am assuming that your Windows
is not Genuine, and your problem with updates stems from that. Movie
Maker shipped 2.1 on the sp2 CD - have you done the Genuine check?

Could you please clarify what you mean by "updates that don't seem to work"?

Exactly what symptoms do you see?

Have you visited the Windows Update web site, and tried scanning for
updates?

Have you configured Automatic Updates to run, or not?
