I have tried all of the setting in the compatability wizard with no success.
Can anybody tell me what it is that I am doing wrong?

Office 2003 is compatible with Windows Vista, just make sure you apply
Service Pack 3 after installing it and make sure you install it with
Administrative privileges. This you will have to open Computer > open the
Office 2003 CD, right click Setup and click 'Run as Administrator' on the
contextual menu.

If you're really in a pinch, you might try OpenOffice.org until you can
sort that out.

Strange, each time I've installed Office2003, all I did was start the
installer from Disk 1, without any other options.

It's always worked well that way for me.

I also had no problems. Just stuck in the CD and away she went.

Unless you tell us what specific problems you're experiencing, no one
can begin to help. To start with, I've never heard of any compatibility
issues between Office 2003 and Vista. The combination certainly worked
flawlessly for me, for as long as I used it.

What is the precise problem you're experiencing?
