Office 2003 seems to be not compatible

December '04 a friend tried to install sp2 several times with the computer
freexing up. It seems that my office 2003 is the problem. I want to update
but don't want a hassle with papers due

commputer seemed to work fine until microsoft office was reiinstalled and so
reinstalled it all without sp2 and works fine

There are no compatibility issues with SP2 and Office 2003.
If you experience issues with installing SP2, your system
may be infected with some "malware".
