I recieved this in an email from Microsoft. I also had issues in installing
SP 2. In my case, SP 2 downloaded, but would not install. I didn't recieve
an error code. I chose option 3, but feel free to try any or all options
listed. Also have your Office 2003 install CD available, as the option I
chose asked for some files that were on the CD. Good luck and I hope this
works for you.

Dear David,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Support. My name is Zhengjian
Yang, and I will be assisting you with this Service Request.

I understand that you can not install Office 2003 SP2 successfully. If I
have misunderstood, please let me know.

Please try below steps to resolve this issue:

Method 1: Manually download and install the Service Pack 2 for Office 2003

===========================================

Please download the Office 2003 SP2 at the following website link and then
install it from the hard disk and see whether it can be installed perfectly.

Office 2003 SP2 update download link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

And after opening the page, you can find the link to download the file on
the bottom of the page. There are two files; you can download either of them.
I recommend you download the bigger one
"Office2003SP2-KB887616-FullFile-ENU.exe" as it is the full installation file.

If the installation still failed, please perform the following
troubleshooting steps.

Method 2: Enable Office Source Engine service

==================================

This issue may occur if the Office Source Engine service (OSE.EXE) startup
type is set to "Disabled". By default, the Office Source Engine service
startup type is set to "Manual". Windows Installer uses a custom action to
start the Office Source Engine service. However, Windows Installer cannot
start this service if this service is disabled.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Determine the status of the Office Source Engine service. To do this,
follow these steps:

a. Click "Start", click "Run", type "services.msc" (without the quotation
marks), and then click "OK".

b. In the list of services, double-click "Office Source Engine".

c. View the option that appears in the "Startup type" list.

2. If the start type is set to "DISABLED", modify the startup type to a
setting of "Manual". To do this, right-click "DISABLED" list, click
Properties, General tab. And then select "Manual" in the "Startup type" list,
and then click "OK".

3. Try to install the Office Update packages again.

4. Repeat above steps to enable the "Windows Installer" service again.

If it still failed, please try the Method 3.

Method 3: Disable Local Installation Source

===========================

1. Download the Local Installation Source Tool from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

2. Extract LisTool.exe and LisTool.chm to some location.

3. Run the GUI tool (LISTOOL.exe) and choose the Disable LIS option. Click
next. Select all the check boxes in the subsequent dialog. Then proceed to
Finish.

4. Try to install it again.

If the problem still persists, please try the Method 4

Method 4: Repair Office 2003

===========

To repair Office using Maintenance Mode Setup, follow these steps:

1. Double-click Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Office 2003 entry listed in the Add/Remove Programs
Properties dialog box.

3. Click Repair Office.

4. Click Repair errors in my Office installation and then click Finish.

NOTE: Select the Restore my shortcuts check box if you are having problems
with your Office shortcuts.

5. If you are still having problems, repeat steps 1-3, and then click
Reinstall Office and click Finish.

If the above step doesn't work, please go on with Method 5.

Method 5: Remove and reinstall Office 2003

======================

Before we start any items in these steps, let’s back up your outlook data so
as to avoid further file loss. For more information on back up your outlook
data please go to the following link:

Office stand alone products such as Visio in the list, please remove them
together.

4. Close all applications.

5. Click Start menu-> Run, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box and press Enter.

6. Expand the registry tree on the left pane and locate the following two
registry keys:

the Open box and press Enter.

Note: If some files can't be deleted, please skip them, which don’t
influence the result of the troubleshooting.

11. Empty the Recycle Bin.

12. Restart your computer and install Office 2003.

13. Go to Office Product Updates Web site to check for all available updates:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/of...e/default.aspx
