Well, '
Let's find out why the updates are failing. Could you please provide a verbose log from the failed install for review? This will help us get to the bottom of it. Here is how to get a verbose log that you can error here. 1. Please download KB933666 to your local machine from here. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en 2. Create a folder in the c:\ named Patch. Place office2003-KB933666-FullFile-ENU.exe in that folder. 3. goto start, then run. In the run box type "cmd" (without the quotes). hit enter 4. in the black window that comes up type "cd\" (without the quotes). hit enter then type "cd patch" (without the quotes). hit enter 5. type "office2003-KB933666-FullFile-ENU.exe /c /t:c:\patch /q" (without the quotes). hit enter 6. type "msiexec /p EXCEL.msp /l*v c:\patch\Log.txt /qb" (without the quotes). hit enter 7. It will fail or not. Either way please locate the file c:\patch\Log.txt. Open that log file. If the patch failed, search the log file for “value 3”. Post about 10 lines above and below the “value 3” in this forum. That should give us the answer why it is failing. Eric,
Thank you very much for your quick response. Before, I procede, may I ask: Should I do this with an account that has local administrative rights or not? I'm assuming it has to have local admin rights, but my concern is, that installing the patches always work when I have local admin rights. Right, you would need to be an admin.
I would expect the install to fail logged in as an admin if they are failing when being pushed, because when they are pushed they are installed with admin/system rights. -- Thank you, Eric Ashton Microsoft Office Setup -- This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Thank you Eric.
I ran it once not as an administrator, and it did fail. And I ran it once as an administrator and it ran flawlessly. I looked at both log files. Both of them did not have the "value 3" statement in them. Let me know if you would like to see specific parts of the log files, they are quite large. Again, thanks enormously for your time. -- -Scott Charlton "Eric Ashton" wrote: > Right, you would need to be an admin. > > I would expect the install to fail logged in as an admin if they are failing > when being pushed, because when they are pushed they are installed with > admin/system rights. > > > -- > Thank you, > Eric Ashton > Microsoft Office Setup > > -- > This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. > > > "spc" wrote: > > > Eric, > > > > > > Thank you very much for your quick response. Ok..
Well.. This will be hard to troubleshoot over the forum, because as mentioned.. pushing updates installs updates in the system context. The system context should have the same rights as the admin. I would think under the circumstance that the issue is not the update failing, but in fact the process being used to push the patch. They are being pushed out by our WSUS server, which successfully pushes out
all of our other patches, it seems that it is only Office 2003 patches that are not being sucessfully deployed. Can I somehow turn on enhanced logging during the deployment of the patch so we can get a more detailed error? -- -Scott Charlton "Eric Ashton" wrote: > Ok.. > > Well.. > > This will be hard to troubleshoot over the forum, because as mentioned.. > pushing updates installs updates in the system context. Well typically you can make the following reg changes to enable verbose
logging. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\Installer] "Debug"=dword:00000007 "Logging"="voicewarmup" I am not a WSUS expert (might be a question that should be posted with them) but I would expect Office logs to end up in the windows\logs directory if pushed from Wsus. If you end up getting a log from the WSUS patch push... search the log file for “value 3”. Post about 10 lines above and below the “value 3” in this forum. That should give us the answer why it is failing. -- Thank you, Eric Ashton Microsoft Office Setup -- This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
