Office 2003 SP2 failed

After downloading (via Microsoft Update) the Office 2003 SP2, it starts to
install and about 40/45% of the way through (judjing by the green progress
bar) it asks for the original Office 2003 CD. I put in the CD and it appears
to make progress but then comes up with 'Failed' - no other really useful
information. What should I do?

The version I have is Office Professional 2003 - Home use program which I
got in May 2004 through my employer.

Thank you for these links. They seem very technical. Would I be better
uninstalling Office 2003 and reinstalling? That seems like a simpler solution
if it works?

As long as you have the Office CD, it can't hurt. Make sure you have your Product
Code and anything else you may need for a reinstallation of Office 2003. If you're
not sure of your Product Code -

To reinstall or repair Office -

Method 1 – Open Word, go to Help – Select Detect and Repair

or use Method 2 -

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click the Office 2003 program that you want to repair, and then click Change.
4. In the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box, click Reinstall or Repair, and then
click Next.
5. In the Reinstall or Repair Office dialog box, click Detect and Repair errors in my
Office installation, and then click Install.
6. When the repair process is finished, run the update again.
You will need the Office CD.


You may need to download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to assist
you in cleaning up after Office 2003 and any other redundant office programs.

Thank you for your help.

I tried all of the things on your first reply - it still did not work even
with the enlarged download.

I then uninstalled office completely, and then manually removed leftovers
(e.g. program files/microsoft office), etc. and did a full install - lo and
behold the update process then worked.
