Tried standard update and got
Error Code: 0x51F
Tried downloading the complete 110 MB file suggested when standard update
fails and on install got
Extracting file failed. It is most likely caused by low memory (low disk
space for swapping file) or corrupted Cabinet file.
This is the first time any of the Windows or Office updates have failed.

I had exactly the same event with the same error. I succeeded in going to the
old Office site and checked for updates. It gave me the choice between the
small download and the long one. I prefered the long one (93 Meg) because I
thought it will bring all the files that are needed for the installation. It
worked as a charm

Good luck,

It worked just fine. When I go to update history it is not listed. The only
thing listed is the last failure which was right before following the
instructions below.

Still isn't working for me. I tried the rework before I wrote the original
message. I went back and downloaded the whole file again and it still gives
me the same error message as before, Cabinet file corrupted or inadequate
memory on drive.

I seem to be having the same problem. This is the first time not being able
to install.
I have read that if you are using a registry clean up tool it could remove
files associated with office 2003. If someone gets past this problem i would
greatly appriciate it.. I will continue to research myself

I tried one solution posted above:
Start the registry editor and drill down to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run\OptionalComponents

IMAIL
MAPI
MSFS

Select permissions on each of these keys and add "everyone" and give full
control. Reboot and try the install again. If successful go back and remove
the "everyone" permissions.

It did not affect the error message I am getting. I also tried the update
with the original office cd in the drive and thatt did not affect it either.
Still no solution.

Finally got the upgrade installed. The Microsoft upgrade approach didn't
work. The download of the full version didn't work. Took advice from another
thread and opened one of the office applications, selected "Detect and
Repair" on the Help drop down menu (you need the original cd for this), then
selected "Check for Updates" on the help menu. The upgrade from the office
update site after the detect and repair worked fine. The update is installed.
Thanks to all.
