This 100MB update downloaded OK, but have tried 4 times to install. Almost
completes, then fails. Running XP Pro. Have tried re-booting after a failure,
to clear the air, but still no joy.

rI also have this problem. The log file says error 0x8007063 occurred.
Someone suggested entering "services.msc" in the "run" window under "start."
Once the next window opens, they suggested clicking on "Office Source Engine"
and to make sure it is running. Mine was set for "manual." I switched it to
automatic and also stared it manually. I then tried to download Word Viewer
2003 SP3 again. It failed to install once agin. I'm stuck. Does anyone
have another suggestion?

I have now located the file (100MB and date match) in
Windows/Softwaredownloads and am minded to (a) open it there, saving in
Programmes/Office 2003, or (b) deleting and trying another download. I
hesitate as I may risk a Rumsfeld "unknown/unknown". Advice please?

If you've recently used a registry cleaner then follow Peter Foldes Advice:-

2. Click on Start->Run, type in REGEDIT and click on OK.
3. Locate and select the following registry subkeys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0

4. Right click on 11.0 and rename them to Old11.
5. Close the Registry Editor.

2nd. Detect and Repair Office 2003

1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Click Change/Remove Programs on the left pane.
4. Highlight Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 on the right pane and click
Change.
5. Insert the correct version of CD when it requires.
6. Select "Reinstall and Repair" and click Next.
7. Select "Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation".
8. Click Install and wait the process to end.

3rd. Install the Updates

Thanks for your help. I worked down through all of your suggestions and the
last one (renaming the registry subkeys & repairing Office) did the trick.
Finally my Windows XP and the entire Office suite are completly up to date!
