office 2003 update

I'm running office 2003, windows XP natively in bootcamp on a Macbook Pro.
Yesterday, I began to get the message "Word failed to start correctly the
last time. Starting word in safe mode will help you correct or isolate a
startup problem...etc" after installing Adobe Acrobat Professional 7. I
found several posts concerning issues between MS word 2003 and Acrobat 7
(though I never had issues before with this combination on my Dell laptop).
Completely uninstalling Acrobat did not help. System restore did not help.
I finally uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2003 today, and word would start
normally. After doing all the updates, word again won't start.

You need to post this over to the Mac Office newsgroups

On the web:

Thanks for the quick comment Peter. But should I really go to that newsgroup
if I am running Windows natively? I am not running the MS products written
for Mac.

Since you are having problems updating the Windows versions of Office 2003,
you may also want to post to microsoft.public.officeupdate which is for the
Windows version of Office.

If I recall correctly, issues with Acrobat Professional were with version
7.0. Acrobat updates were required for compatibility with Office 2003.

System Restore, restores only Windows system files not application files.

Since your problem is corrected when you uninstall and re-install Office
2003, you should post which update you installed when the problem occurred.

In the error message, starting Word in safe mode refers Word Safe mode not
system Safe Mode. Did you try starting Word 2003 using the /safe option {see
Word 2003 Help}?

Problem solved. I renamed the Normal.dot so that Word would generate a new
one. Now everything is fine, for now.
Perhaps one of the updates modifies the Normal.dot file? Recall that I
reinstalled Office 2003, and Word would start normally. After reinstalling
Office 2003, I had done absolutely nothing to Word except start it up one
time just to see if it worked before doing all the updates (so I had not
changed anything that would have modified Normal.dot). After doing all
suggested high priority updates using Microsoft Update, then the problem with
starting up word appeared again.
I guess I'll take a chance and try installing Acrobat again, but without the
Word Add-in.
The only update that occured this week prior to the problem starting was
"Update to .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 for the .NET Framework Assistant
1.0 x86 (KB963707)"

Glad, replacing normal.dot, solved your problem.

I would reinstall Acrobat with the Word add-in. Then, immediately open
Acrobat 7.0 and go to Help, Updates and allow Acrobat to install all updates
listed.

..Net updates, especially Service Packs, are known for causing problems.
