Office 2007 SP1 install failure - Error 0x80070663

I've recently installed Office 2007 Ultimate on a system running XP. I am
able to download updates, but installation fails over and over and I get the
error 0x80070663. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2007 and made the
reg modifications per KB913754. I've also contacted Microsoft, but the tech
was not very knowledgeable. Any thoughts about what I should try? While I
know how to download and install the updates manually, I just want to figure
out what's wrong.

Are any earlier versions of Office also installed? Was any trial-version of
Office 2007 ever installed?

I had Office XP installed, which Office 2007 "removed" (I'm not sure how
thoroughly that was done, though). I have never used a trial version. My
version of XP is SP3 (R2).
