Office 2007 SP2 update failed

Hello,

basically, I can't install that particular update ("2007 Microsoft Office
Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2)"). The updater just tells me that it wasn't
installed, no error code or anything; I have no idea what to do. Several
security updates depend on that one so just not having it is not an option
for me. I already tried removing SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 and trying
to update after a clean boot. Then again, that solution was for a similar
problem with Vista.

The weird thing is, the Windows Update page stopped displaying this update
at some point while the Office Update page still displays it and doesn't let
me install any other updates.

I'd appreciate it if someone could help me with that particular problem or
point me to some general resources about update failures, I'm out of ideas.

[Forwarded to Office Update newsgroup via crosspost]

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista x64 SP2) when
posting to these newsgroups.

Is Automatic Updates no longer offering Office 2007 SP2 or is it not offered
when you run Microsoft Update manually (Vista)/at Microsoft Update website
(WinXP)?

You receive an error message when you try to apply any of the 2007 Office
service packs on a computer that is running WinXP SP2 [or SP3]
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942101

How to troubleshoot failures updating your Office installation (via Office
Update website)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304498

Tip: Insert your Office 2007 CD into the appropriate drive bay prior to your
next attempt to install SP2.

Sorry; I'm running Windows XP SP3.

I don't know how to manually run the automatic update thing so I can't
verify that. The Microsoft Update website (update.microsoft.com) doesn't list
this particular update for me anymore, but the updater at
office.microsoft.com does.

My Windows Installer seems to be up to date.

That actually made things worse. Installing Windows Script + updates
apparently causes Internet Explorer to crash on certain pages such as
about:Tabs and the Office update page. Also randomly. Looks like I'm stuck
until I figure out how to get rid of it again.

There is a very good chance that all of your problems are due to a
hijackware infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2. [WinXP ONLY!! =>] Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

I don't mean to be rude, but I don't think hijackware is causing this. The
Windows Script update I downloaded apparently replaced some files Internet
Explorer was using. The nuke'n'pave approach worked nicely there, so no more
random crashes with IE. :-)

I'd also expect hijackware to actually hijack the browser, like redirecting
searches and stuff. I didn't notice such behavior, and neither did HijackThis.

Also, I'm still not able to install that blasted update, with or without the
installation disc, so there has to be something else that's not quite right.

I'll do a malware scan over night though just to be sure, thanks for your
advice.

Have you tried downloading the full file and installing?

Doesn't work either. It just exits with an error halfway in. Again, no error
code or anything.
