Office 2007 takes over from Office XP after windows update

After yesterday's windows update, the trial version of Office 2007 that was
pre-installed on my notebook has pre-empted the Office XP that I had
installed and want to keep running.

Aside from just venting for a moment about how egregious this is - Microsoft
Update replaced a program that I installed and own with one that I never
installed and would have to pay hundreds of dollars for - I desperately need
to get my old Office back.

At the moment, Office 2007 is the default for all Excel files (I haven't
tried any others). How do I restore Office 2002/XP. I still have my
installation disk, if that will help.

Thanks for your help

I think the most simplified answer would be to uninstall the Office 2007
trial. If your XP is still installed, it will revert to default. If it was
uninstalled, simply reinstall it from the disk you have.

Hello Jed,

I suspect that the updates might have changed your file associations, so
that if you double-click on a file with an 'XLS' extension, Excel 2007 will
load. Similarly, if you click on a file with a 'DOC' extension, Word 2007
will load, etc.

This doesn't mean that the programs -- Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
etc -- that were installed with Office 2002/XP have been removed from your
system

To verify this, do a search on your hard drive for WINWORD.EXE. If you have
both Word 2002 and Word 2007 installed on your machine, you should find TWO
WINWORD.EXE files. Look for the one whose version is 10.0.6846.0. This is
the executable for Word 2002. Double-click on this file and Word 2002/XP
should launch.

Do the same for EXCEL.EXE, MSACCESS.EXE, and POWERPNT.EXE. If the version
number of these files begin with '10,' these are the Office 2002/XP
versions. Click on each of them to ensure that they correctly launch.

Now, in order to change the file associations that have been changed, you'll
need to open Windows Explorer and click on Tools | Folder Options | File
Types.

For example. to change the association for Word, locate 'DOC' within the
Registered file types window and click on it once so that it's highlighted.
Then click on the 'Change...' radio button. The 'Open With' dialog box
displays.

Navigate to the WINWORD.EXE file that represents Word 2000. Click on the
file and then click 'Open.' Make sure there's a tick mark in the box on the
bottom that says: 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of
file.'

Do this for the EXCEL.EXE, MSACCESS.EXE, and POWERPNT.EXE files.

You should be all set.

Full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1)?

Why is the Office 2007 trialware still installed?

It was probably unwise to leave the trial version of Office 2007 installed when
installing Office XP. It is likely that the updates were not written with this
possibility in mind, and have inadvertently reset the file associations.

I think that Office XP has probably not been uninstalled; you can check by going
to the Add/Remove Programs control panel.

I recommend you uninstall Office 2007, then perform a repair installation of
Office XP - start by clicking Change next to Office XP in the Add/Remove
Programs control panel.

Harry.
