Office 2007 updates: "The installation of this package failed"

I had to reinstall Office 2007 due to an ActiveSync issue.
No sooner than I finished Windows Update prompted me for a truckload of
updates.
All downloaded OK but after what appeared to be installation, they all
failed:

Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB936960)
Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB936514)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (KB936509)
Update for 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB932080)
Update for Word 2007 (KB934173)
Update for Office 2007 (KB934393)
Security Update for Office 2007 (KB934062)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 (KB936646)
Update for Office 2007 (KB934391)
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 (KB937608)
Update for Outlook Junk Email Filter 2007 (KB942575)

I went ahead and manually downloaded all of the above and tried to install.
EVERY one fails with a generic error message: "The installation of this
package failed"
Needless to say the MS knowledge base is useless in deciphering such a
non-message... and I've tried all suggestions contained in the KB regarding
the specific error codes found in the Update History.

Any ideas?

i have almost the same prooblem. I can easily download, and it looks like
the computer have installed every download, but when i check in the update
log, they all list as failed.
The weird part is, that in the list of installed updates, they are listed as
installed, so i can figure out, if they are installed or not.. if you, or
anyone else have a sollution or answer to this, i would be veru gratefull..
