Office 2007 Updates

Nine updates were installed for Office 2007 on 8/10. PowerPoint immediately
began crashing, and now will not start in either normal or safe mode. Word
opens but is also crashing. I ran the diagnostic tool (memory, hard disk,
etc.), and everything passed. The Detect and Repair function of Office does
not help. I uninstalled and reinstalled Office (twice), to no avail.
Finally, I uninstalled all the updates, except for Office Service Pack 1
(which apparently cannot be uninstalled). The ppt files that will not open
in Office 2007 open fine in Open Office. Anyone else have this problem or
know of a fix, other than a complete Vista system restoration (for about the
5th time)?

I seem to have fixed the problem using Backup and Restore in the Control
Panel. I restored the system to a date prior to any of the updates, and
Office is now functioning again. I am not going to re-install those updates.

Final posting: When I examined the Update history, (Installed Updates), I
noticed that the Office Updates had already been installed on 7/16, and are
still there. It looks like Windows Update tried to reinstall them on 8/10,
and that may have caused the problems - just in case anyone else encounters
this. At any rate, the Backup and Restore Center seems to be a useful
feature.
