Office Update won't run ...

Help - please (I know this groups says its Windows Update, but I've
tried the Office Setup group and they nudged me in this direction!)

I'm rying to run office update, and it gets 10% of the way through the
check and needs to install an ActiveX component.

It pops the message bar up at the top of the screen, but it then
immediately disappears.

It then shows me the page on how to fix my security settings and I've
done all these (including adding trusted sites) but it makes no
difference - we just cycle through the same screens.

I have previously been able to install ActiveX stuff during updates
and cant figure why this has changed. I haven't knowingly changed any
security settings and have tried changing them all back to Default,
but to no avail.

The only thing I've changed recently (and this is why I wanted to run
Office Update) is to install Outlook 2003 (The rest of office running
here is 2000).

TIA for any assistance.

"John F Kappler",

I'm sorry you are hitting this issue, and doubly so that you were "nudged"
by the Office Setup team (is this a newsgroup?) to post over here. I want
to help, but let me state right at the start: I do not know, and I am just
guessing. It seems to me you have an advantage if you added our Windows
Update site to your trusted sites, because that is where you can lower the
setting security a bit, and it should just work. See what I mean in option
2 below:

You have two options I do not see in your post:
1. Turn off Pop-up blocker before going to the site and scanning for
updates.
a. Close all Internet Explorer windows, and any other Internet browsers.
b. Open one Internet Explorer window.
c. In that window, click Tools
d. Click Pop-up Blocker
e. Click Turn Off Pop-up Blocker (If you are using some other pop-up
blocker, then turn those off, too.)
f. Try Office Update again.

(Note here: I am trying to reproduce your issue in Windows Update, and I
have my security set for Internet on High, just for this experiment only.
There is an Option 3 if you do not want a default level less than High for
Trusted Sites.)
2. Set your default level to Medium within Trusted Sites, assuming the
office website is listed: (This only failed for me when I moved the default
level to High, and then blocked Active Scripting)
a. Close all Internet Explorer windows, and any other Internet browsers.
b. Open one Internet Explorer window.
c. In that window, click Tools
d. Click Internet Options...
e. Click the Security Tab
f. Click the Trusted Sites icon to highlight it
g. Click the Sites button
h. Ensure that http://office.microsoft.com is the exact URL listed in
your trusted sites.
i. Move the security bar to any setting, lower than High, that you like.
j. Click OK
k. Try Office Update again.

3. Enable Signed ActiveX controls and Active Scripting within the Trusted
Sites zone of Internet Explorer:
a. Close all Internet Explorer windows, and any other Internet browsers.
b. Open one Internet Explorer window.
c. In that window, click Tools
d. Click Internet Options...
e. Click the Security Tab
f. Click the Trusted Sites icon to highlight it
g. Click the Sites button
h. Ensure that http://office.microsoft.com is the exact URL listed in
your trusted sites.
i. Click the Custom button
j. Scroll down first to ActiveX controls and plug-ins
k. Enable "Download signed ActiveX controls"
l. Enable "Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe"
(please remember that this is a TRUSTED SITE and will only behave this way
at trusted sites, unless changed by the user.)
m. Enable "Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting"
m. Enable "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins"
n. Scroll down further to Scripting
o. Enable Active Scripting
p. Click OK to exit Security Settings
q. Click OK again to exit Internet Options
r. Try Office Update again.

Let us know how this turned out!

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]
