Windows XP 8 updates for June 13 succeed, but 3 Office Updates fail with
Error 1603 MsiInstaller. Failure occurs from both Microsoft Update and Office
Update sites, and latter (Office Update site) does a new download. Checked
services based on post with same error in the past, and OSE.exe (Office
Source Engine) is started and Startup Type is manual. I have Microsoft
Office Standard Edition 2003 for Students and Teachers. After failure at
Office Update site, I permitted a report to be sent to Microsoft.

I resolved the same issue by simply installing my Office Installation CD into
the CD Rom Drive before attempting to install the updates. I noticed with
the installation of each of the updates that the CD was accessed during the
gathering information phase of the update installation.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. My issue relates to file type for Office documents,
which shows in Windows Explorer as OpenOffice.org.doc for Word docments. The
file extension itself is fine, but the FileExt Type is wrong. This computer
initially had Open Office 2.0, then trial MS Office Student Teacher, and then
activated MS Office Student Teacher. Uninstalled Open Office today, and
later ran CCleaner-Issues, which found some OO remnants but problems remain
the same. MS Office Student Teacher when trying to Repair or Reinstall fails
with a message of an error and a Send Report request. Attempts to correct
FileExt Type via GUI methods has no effect, even with TeaTimer off. I have
stopped short of uninstall/reinstall as the applications work and not a
convenient moment to go too far and perhaps a "fix" can be located. Calls to
MS 800 892 5234 and 425 635 4948 (listed in back of MS Office Student Teacher
pamphlet) ring once, connect, and then nothing but silence. Search of
registry shows only limited number of openoffice.org.doc entries. Excel has
OpenOffice.org.xls as FileExt Type in Windows Explorer.

Oddly, update to MS Office (KB916521) succeeded on May 10, 2006.

Attn: Fellow-users of Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003

I am a user of Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003. I also encountered a
similar problem with installing KB916518, KB917334 and KB917149 from
Automatic Microsfot Update. I even downloaded the FULL files of these 3 files
from Microsoft Download Center and from Microsoft Office; ran REPAIR of the
Office Installation CD; shut down Anti-Virus and Zone Alarm; took up Roggie's
suggestion by putting the Office Installtion CD into the CD ROM Drive before
attempting to install each of those 3 updates. However, installation of the
3 Office files under reference STILL FAILED.

Perhaps the Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 was the
culprit causing the failure of installing Office updates? I'd appreciate help
to resolve the issue please.

I have the same issue. Same releases of Office, same steps. (full download,
repair, verified OSE startup, toggled OSE off then on, just in case that sets
flags, and had the CD inserted. The 3 still fail to install.

I have the same problem, the eight XP updates installed fine.
Three office 2003 updates do not.
I keep getting reminders to install them and each time I try to install them
I get an update failed notice for each.
This has happened many times yesterday and today (June 13th & 14th)
I am not useing a student version.

The three that fail to install are:
KB917334
KB916518
KB917149

Complete uninstall or MS Office Student Teacher, clean or registry with
RegScrubXP and CCleaner-Issues, Reinstall of MS Office Student Teacher. Then
needed MS Office 2003 SP2 and a all other subsequent updates. All updates
including 3 from June 13 are now installed. For a different post, the
FileExt Type still says OpenOffice.org.doc for Word files, OpenOffice.org.xls
for Excel, and OpenOffice.org.ppt for PowerPoint. Again this is the FileExt
Type that is wrong, not the actual file extension. All attempts to
reassociate have failed so far. I regret ever having installed Open Office
2.0.

1. I think you can use, within any OpenOffice application,
Tools->Options->Load/Save->MicrosoftOffice to de-associate OpenOffice with
Microsoft file formats, by clearing all the check-boxes.

2. You can use control panel "Folder Options" -> "File Types" to
re-associate the file extensions (such as .doc) with the applications that
you desire. Navigate to the extension, click "Change", select the desired
application.
