Office XP Installation Pop-Up

I'm installing Vista for a friend, and have encountered this (evil) pop up
that appears to be the beginning of installing Office XP. This then freezes
whatever app I'm in for about a minute, and then allows me to cancel the
installation, three times. It then goes away for about 2-5 minutes, and then
the process starts again.

This seems to be activated by changing a setting/opening a new window/etc,
but sometimes it's completely random.

It also seems to cause some hardware device to fail, but with no visible
side effects.

(Sorry if this isn't the right fourm)

I had a similar thing happen with office 2003. I d/l office 2007 first then
vista.. and then everytime I opened a new window or command it would try to
reinstall outlook 2003 for several seconds. I finally had to do a clean
install. couldnt get rid of it..

I'm going to agree with Alec, but offer a wild guess as a reason. When you
upgrade from XP to Vista, the Office XP registry keys (Office 2003 also, it
seems) don't get put into all the correct spots in Vista. Uninstalling
Office won't work correctly, either, since there will be many left over
little landmines in the registry.

Try wiping the installation off, installing Vista to a clean partition, then
installing Office, then getting all the data files from your most recent
backup.
