Offline Files disconnected over VPN

I used Offline Files with great success under XP. When connected
through OpenVPN I sometimes had to force sychronization so that XP can
connect to the server.
But Vista does not want to connect to the server through OpenVPN even
if I right click on "sync center" and choose "sync all". I can ping
the the server with the server name and IP. Explorer can even folders
and list the files on the server if I enter the IP.
How can I force Offline Files to connect to the server through OpenVPN?
