Offline Messages, and My Status

My friend said he sent me offline messages a few times, but I neve seen them.
There one time when I logged on, old offline messages, including those dated
a month ago, popped up. Why were those offline messages delayed? Can I force
my WLM check whether there's offline messages for me?
Also, why would my friends tell me that I'm offline when actually I'm online?
How would I make sure that everyone sees me as online?
