old programes, files and games ..!!

i was wondering if i upgrade my pc from xp proffesional to windows vista
would programes, files and games that run ok now on my 32-bit xp profisional
run ok on windows vista ?
or i would have to wait for patches and upgrades from their manufactring
companies like what happend to me when i upgraded from win98 to win xp which
made me lose lots of files and programes at the time ?
or windows vista will be compatible with all ?
