I couldn't use the old V4 site for about the last 2 months it was up, and
now I can't use the V5 site either. Here are some of the things I've looked
into in the past two months...

http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/0x800c0005.htm
http://www.updatexp.com/0x800A138F.html
http://www.petri.co.il/wu_problems_800a138f.htm

I've also tried the "Microsoft Online Assisted Support" site, but the ocx
fails to upload my system info. So, I'm out of ideas at this point. I can
post the session entries from both Windows Update logs if anybody needs
them.

Hello Alex,
Did the setup of XP SP2 complete ok? (I'm assuming your on XP). or is this sys on XP SP1 ?

The 72ee2 error translates to Error-Internet-timeout The request has timed out.

Do you have a 3rd-part "anonimizer" program ? or a "popup-ad stopper/remover" ?
Do you have Norton Internet Security?

Make very sure your pc has the correct & current date & local time & timezone. Having incorrect time will give the W U servers/programs a hiccup. (ie, don't have it a day ahead or backdated)

You may get to the windows update site, but yet a setting in IE could be the blocker.
Recheck your Security & Privacy settings AND the ADVANCED settings in I.E.

1. In Internet Explorer> Tools, click Internet Options, and then click Languages....
If this box is empty, add at least one language -- your usual national language.
If you happen to have 2 or more, move English up on this list.

2. Disengage your Discussion Bar in Internet Explorer: Click View on main IE menu.
Point to Explorer Bar. If "Discuss" has a check mark, click Discuss to *remove the check mark* and clear it.
You may note, if the discussion bar is active, it would appear near the bottom of IE window.

3. I. E. Tools >Internet Options > Advanced Tab > (scroll down thru the list)

These are "some" of the items that I do have CHECKed (selected):
Under HTTP 1.1 settings --
Use HTTP 1.1 (ON / Selected)
+ Enable / check to use HTTP 1.1 with proxy servers **** <<----

and under Security :
Clear (un-check) the check box next to "Check for server certificate revocation" . ( *OFF* )

Use SSL 2.0 (ON / selected)
Use SSL 3.0 (ON)

4. Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Connections Tab
Click on LAN Settings > * Uncheck* the Automatically detect settings.
Make sure _no other_ settings on this screen are enabled.

5. Internet Explorer > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.
Look very closely at line that says: "Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone" to *clear* the selection.
(e.g. You want that to be clear or un-checked (un-ticked)).

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (with HTTPS)

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

http://download.windowsupdate.com

Click OK.
Apply changes, then try Windows Update again.
- - - -

As a temporary measure, type in or click this HTTPS address
https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

For Windows XP Service Pack 2 systems, substitute v5 for v4 above.

This is Windows XP SP1 or SP1a. I don't have an "anonimizer" program, and I
have "Pop Up Stopper" completely disabled (It doesn't start up at all). I
do have Norton Internet Security 2004 with add blocking disabled, and Norton
SystemWorks 2003. Disabling both of these does nothing, although I am
starting to wonder if NIS has something to do with it. I have tried
everything else you mentioned multiple times.

I was able to find 0x80072ee2 defined as ERROR_INTERNET_TIMEOUT on the
MVPs.org site, but I can't find 0x800C0008. Any idea what that error is?
Also, I noticed that the V4 "C:\Program Files\Windows Update" folder is
gone, and the V5 "C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate" folder is completely empty
(No sub directories, no files or cabs).

Hello Alex,
Take a look at Symantec's support website for a specific article on Norton Internet Security. Look at the procedure to tweak the "privacy control", as listed in the paragraph "solution".
Be careful in case this link wraps ---- here it is
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...c=sg#_Section1

Follow the directions for your version of NIS. Make the change to NIS & try Windows Update again.

If still no joy, let's have you post back the log entries for the last 1 or 2 dates (or sessions) at Windows Update.
Use Windows' Notepad to open this log:
C:\Windows\Windows Update.log (note space after Windows & before Update)
You need to find & "isolate" the section of the log for that "fail date". Copy those & paste into your reply here.

This system should only have one folder \Program Files\WindowsUpdate. Mine still has a subfolder \V4 but that is essentially empty.
(This system is on XP SP2 with V5. It now has a folder C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution.)

The exception 0x800C0008 is quite common. My last answer is basically the 1st pass at this problem.

Post back with progress.

I'm running Windows 2000 sp4. I keep getting 0x800c0008 errors. My
computer will load the first page, scan for updates, and find 16 critical
updates and 7 others. Then it presents the message:

"An error occurred while scanning for driver updates. We are not able to
display any updated drivers for your system."

I find the error in the windowsupdate.log file.

I read through knowledge base article 813444 about enabling SSL, and the
windows update support page identifies my error as relating to SSL.

But when I run Stanford.edu ssl test, it indicates that SSL is working.

It's a new Dell computer, and it would not work right out of the box. I
have put it ahead of the firewall, it does not have any blocking software
of any sort, exept Norton AV. I disabled it just as a test, and that
didn't help either.

I tried the tips in the previous articles (most of which are in 813444)
but that didn't help either.

I have another Dell on the same network, and it can do windowsupdate just
fine. As far as I can tell, the networking settings are identical on the
two machines.

Any ideas???

Bob

Bob,
In this same thread, 3 lines ahead, my answer of 8-10-2004 to Alex Niblett, has some general tips. (Not a cure-all; but a first screening).
Be sure you have covered those points.

Then go to your IE browser, do a Help/About. You need to see a line about Cipher-strength 128 bit.
Be sure this system does not have any so-called "anonimizer" ( a 3rd party app that hides the version & identity of IE).
Do you have other apps or utilities (besides NAV) in your Windows startup? what are they?

But since you mention this pc always had problems: Did you ( and I would urge you to) contact Dell support ?
Certainly if it is still under warranty, contact Dell.

One thing you want to make sure of --- that this pc's IE can navigate to "plain vanilla" sites.

P.S. When you 1st get to W U, are you selecting to scan for driver updates?

Hi Maurice,

Yes, I read through your post and tried your suggestions before posting. I
have office, acrobat assistant, and microtec scanner finder in my startup
folder.

I'll give Dell a call Friday when I return to the office and see what they
say.

The PC can navigate websites generally (i.e. cnn.com works fine). When I
get to WU, I click on scan, it does, and the menu on the left changes to
show it has found updates, but clicking on those links produces _no_
response.
