According to my firewall logs windows update is authenticating as
DOMAIN\COMPUTERNAME$ not the DOMAIN\USERNAME. When I added "all
authenticated users" to my rule in ISA 2004 the error no longer occurs and I
can get to the updates.

Bingo Auto!
I've just been struggling with this myself and I changed my firewal rule and
sure enough, WU works now. This didn't matter if I was running XP, XP w/SP1
or SP2.

This works somewhat. I am still having trouble downloading all the updates
and WU doesn't work half the time. I have to constantly go back and keep
trying. If I move the workstation on a network without ISA, everything works
just fine.
Help?

OK - it does work - but cant people back at MS give a more appropriate
solution for that problem - cause the problem only persists on computers with
SP2, or, to be more exact, ONLY with computers which are trying to reach v5
windowsupdate site. And why the hell am i supposed to comprimise my security
with allowing all authenticated users to access the WEB, whether i personally
like the idea of people accessing the web through user authentitication in
AD, and so that ISA picks up allowence from AD, through specific users which
i allow to access the web..
