That is often a sign that you have something interfering with the update,
e.g. active virus scanner, or other security programs which would,
in particular, prevent files from being replaced in key system directories.
Find the list of modules which that update is trying to update.
Find all instances of them on your harddrive and check the versions
of each. You will probably find that you have a mixture of old and
new versions and that could be the reason for the update not completing
successfully.
Various logs can provide clues about exactly how far the update
progressed if you care to search your drive for them.
Although there may be some naming conventions which may be useful
to use as hints for finding such files I find it more satisfactory to take
the approach of searching all files for a particular string because there is
a large variation in the naming of diagnostic files depending on the fix type.
The only concession I usually give to performance considerations
for finding them is if I know when I attempted an update I can use
that single day as a modification date.
Good luck
