Yet one more thing that worked fine under XP yet fails miserably under
windows Vista for absolutely no legitimate reason.

For software compatibility testing, I like to install both a PCIe ATI card
and a PCI nvidia card, thus allowing me to test 3D product compatibility
under both manufacturers. Always worked fine in XP. Does it work with Vista?
Of course not. That would be way to simple.

We now have the dreaded 'WDDM' which doesn't support 'heterogenous multi-
adapter' mode. What this means is that the OS has a brain fart if you attempt
to put two different adapters in the same PC that requires different drivers.
This could be in my example an nvidia and an ATI product, or in other
examples I've read about, two ATI products from different generations, or two
NVIDIA products from different generations or a legacy card that only has
XPDM drivers and a newer card that only has WDDM drivers, or ...

Throwing in a cheap PCI card used to be a nice simple way to get video on a
third monitor (or a bigscreen or projected), but no, like most things in
Vista it is now ripe with needless complication and incompatibility.

Can you install network adapters from two different manufacturers? Sure. Can
you install raid controllers from two different manufacturers? Absolutely.
Sound cards? Yes. Capture Cards? Fine. IO/USB adapters? Why not. Graphics
adapters? No! The Vista world would implode at the very thought of such a
ridiculous idea!

Oh yes, the stated reason is that it 'improves stability', but we know the
real reason: like most of the OS, microsoft simply left it half-finished in
their rush to get Vista to market.

Thank you Vista, another 'feature' designed to make my life easier.
