After several days and failed suggestions I was able to finally successfully
install the KB886903 hotfix.
Must be sure you have no viruses or spies. I use MS Antispyware, Ad-Aware SE
and Spybot, which was able to find two which the others did not.
Pre download the following files:
1]- MS Windows Install Cleanup Utility [msiccu.exe]
2]- dotnetfx.exe V:1.1 Must be careful, as all versions (1.0, 1.1 and 2.0)
have the same name.
3]- NDP1.1sp1-KB867460.
4]- NDP1.1sp1-KB886903.
Net Framework 1.1 would not uninstall, giving an error that it could not
open the pack.
Here is the procedure:
1- Tried a manual uninstall [KB824643] with no success.
The version 2 of the MS Windows Install Cleanup Utility [msiccu.exe]
uninstalled FW1.1 Ok.
2- But there was enough junk left over in the Registry, that I could not
reinstall FW1.1.
For further cleanout I use the Registry Mechanic, but others similar should
also find the remaining entries. Then the registry was clean. Manually
delete the folders Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v1.1.4322 and
Windows\System32\URTTemp. Also the file Windows\system32\mscoree.dll
3- At this point FW 1.1 installed Ok [dotnetfx.exe V:1.1]
4- Then install NDP1.1sp1-KB867460. It will probably say that is already
installed, nevertheless go ahead and reinstall, or the next step will not
work.
5- Finally install NDP1.1sp1-KB886903, and you are done.
