last may 29, upon boot of computer, process would not go beyond two tone blue
screen that has xp logo. had to reformat hard drive. now may 26, 2005, it
happened again. it is like a software timeout. (presario 2100us, ser pack 2,
norton 2003 w/updates). I really do not want this to occur again.

> norton 2003 w/updates

Uninstall the above and then run their Removal Tool :
http://snipurl.com/f7li
Click the plus sign next to the installation that is on the system.
(i.e. a stand alone install or part of a suite of programs)

eTrust, in conjunction with Microsoft, is offering either a one year
free trial or, 2 years for $19.95, of ezAntivirus :
http://my-etrust.com/microsoft

Avast is a free AV that works well, also :
http://avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

rich, thanks for the response.
mow, your plan sounds like the one to go with. I just completed all of your
recommendations and went with avast.
just curious, do you know why the program times out?? it seems logical,
because norton is the only annually renewable software on this computer.
I must say, it was suspect, however I needed a voice of authority.

What would Norton have to do with the system not booting to the desktop? I
don't see the connection. Wouldn't this be a problem with Windows, the
system BIOS or possibly a piece of hardware? As for getting rid of Norton,
that is the best thing that can be done for any system, as far as I am
concerned.

kevin, the only logical answer I can give you is norton is the only program
(that I know of) in my computer that has a time factor (annually renewable).
thanks to those who responded. this is my first question and the group (esp
mow) was very helpful.
