For the past few days every time we try to use Windows update on Wndows XP
sp2, we recieve the error message "0x8DDD0004." We have gone through all the
reccomended steps on the Microsoft update help site but still no luck, and
the support centre does not offer solutions for Windows XP. The automatic
update is turned on but we have had no updates for months. Can anyone suggest
anything?
Thank you.

1. Make sure you are logged in as an Administrator (if you are not the
Administrator, then log in as an Administrator and try Windows Update
again).

2. Make sure your firewall is not blocking the Update site and check any pop
up stopper programs.

3. Now check in IE tools\manage add-ons (Win XP SP2 only) making sure that
WuWebControlClass is enabled. (Select "Add-ons that have been used by
Internet Explorer" in the "Show:" drop down list)

4. You may also wish to check c:\windows\Downloaded Program Files to see if
anything is corrupted there.

5. Make sure you accepted the Microsoft Trust Certificate
To turn on automatic updating of trusted root authority certificates
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d....mspx?mfr=true

1. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs
2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
3. Select the Update Root Certificates check box.
4. Click Next, and then click Finish.

Note
.. To open Add/Remove Windows Components, click Start, click Control Panel,
click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.

6. Check security settings, make sure they are not set too high

7. Delete cookies and temp files

8. Re-register these files, by clicking Start, Run and typing:-

REGSVR32 wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 atl.dll
REGSVR32 wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 wups.dll

You should receive a successful message after each one.
Try Windows Update Again.

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-register some more files:-

net stop cryptsvc
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
net start cryptsvc

You should receive a successful message after each one.

If necessary:-

Re-install Windows Update files

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6...gent20-x86.exe

Note If you have an x64-based computer, visit the following Microsoft Web
site:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6...gent20-x64.exe

Click Save in the File Download-Security Warning dialog box, and then select
the location where you want to save the file.
Double-click the file that you saved

NB - A note from Torgeir Bakken [MVP]

Note that if it says "Install is not needed since Windows Update Agent is
already installed.", run the exe with the command line switch /wuforce, like
this:
WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe /wuforce

This problem with WU is insane! What has happened that so many people are
having same problems?
I have been trying bunches of the suggested fixes in these posts but so
far...no good~
Am I supposed to have Pop Up blocker turned off prior to trying fixes?
"c:\windows\Downloaded Program Files "...how can I tell if anything is
corrupted here?

I successfully re-registered most of the suggested .dll files but some come
back and say they can't be found. What is wrong and is there something I can
do recover them?
When trying to use WU I got error code "0x8024D007". Where can I look this
up and find a solution?

Thanks in advance for any help! Jenny
