Right click desktop > Personalise

On the left of the window that pops up is a link saying "Change desktop
icons" - click it and reselect the recycle bin

Right click a blank space on the desktop, select Personalize, click "Change
Desktop Icons, under tasks in the left column, place a check next to the
Recycle Bin, click apply and OK.

Right-click desktop, choose Personalization, click on "change desktop
icons", put check mark next to Recycle Bin.

The others told you how to get it back. Here's how to remove the
"Delete" option so you don't remove it again:

Hide the "Delete" command from Recycle Bin context menu - MVP Ramesh -

A perfect example of how ng FAQ's could answer those questions that are
posted on a daily basis... sigh...

Vista was stupid in changing the recycle bin in being deletable that way...

In XP it was not that way.... and for a good reason!

I have seen this same question 100 times in the newsgroups...
people want to empty it but it seems they select delete instead...

this shows CLEARLY that vista was NOT tested with real people enough (as if
we didn't know .. dahh....) or else they would not let this option be like
that....

Carl,

Myself and many other beta testers pointed this out repeatedly-
the product team was well aware of the situation. It happened
to many of us, even after we knew better. Numerous posts in this
group, prior to Vista's RTM, about it. Many of us sent feedback in.
It would have been so simple to change.

The upsetting thing about Vista and its bugs- Vista had an "unprecedented"
beta period, with an "unprecedented" amount of beta testers. This is
especially true when Vista reached Beta 2. Jim Allchin used the word
"unprecedented" when describing the beta period.

A respected MVP who used to post here a lot, said he had it on good
information that it was *one* person on the development team that
was so insistent 'delete' remain in the Recycle bin's context menu.

I can only imagine how many folks this has actually happened to,
a lot of users who have problems never find there way here... many
don't even know what a newsgroup is. A lot of those users probably
had to call their PC maker's support number, or they called Microsoft
support. Either way, totally wasted resources on a problem many of us
saw coming and reported it. A problem that could/can easily be fixed-
someone at Microsoft just decided not to because they wanted it that
way.... dam the users.

Actually, it's a perfect example of how many beta testers were ignored,
because many of us saw this would be a problem and reported it.
Many posts about it in these groups during the betas.
