When I open explorer, it always goes to the Start Menu, which I don't want.
I want it to open to a different folder. How do I do that?

Open Explorer
go to whichever folder you want
right-click on the folder, and drag it to an open area of the Desktop
release and select Create Shortcut Here
(be careful not to Copy or Move the folder)

Now use the shortcut to go directly to that folder.

Hi and thanks. So there is no way to open explorer and have it automatically
go to a particular folder?

You need to set the location in the shortcut properties for Windows
Explorer.

Right click the shortcut for Windows Explorer and select Properties/Shortcut
Tab.

In the Target Line, enter the path to the location you want to open.

Example: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,
This will take you to Computer with all of the drives showing.

Example: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe C:
This will open WE with the C: drive expanded.

Example: D:\My Folder
This will open WE with the My Folder on the D: drive expanded.

You can use the following in the 'Target' field of the Windows Explorer
shortcut to go directly to your C: drive, this is what I use. -
C:\Windows\explorer.exe /n,/e,c:
Just add to 'c:' with whatever folder location you want and it will open to
that.
Good luck.

Thanks, Ronnie. I'm sure I'm getting closer, but I'm still doing something
wrong. I went to the C:\ drive, searched for "windows explorer", it returned
a list of shortcuts on the C:\ drive, I highlighted "Windows Explorer"
shortcut, opened "Properties", then opened the "Shortcut" tab. In the field
marked "Target", I placed "C:\Users\cstark\Documents" (without the quotes).
I hit "Apply", and there is no change when I open an explorer window.

Can you help? Thank you.

Thanks for your help, but no luck. Please look at what I have and see where
I'm going wrong:
1. I've been altering the actual shortcut itself (should I alter a
different file?). The actual shortcut is in this folder:
c:\Users\cstark\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\ Start
Menu\Programs\Accessories
2. The file it is attempting to run is explorer.exe in this folder:
c:\windows

Several questions:
Do I have to reboot?
Should I be altering a different file?
Does the target need specific upper and lower case designations?

Thank you. (please also see the other information I sent previously).

You have to configure the specific shortcut that you always use to open
Windows Explorer. Are you using a shortcut located on the Start Menu or in
the All Programs menu?

If you do not have a shortcut to WE on the Start Menu, go to Start/All
Programs/Accessories. Right click the WE shortcut there and select the Pin
to Start Menu option.

When you click the Start button, you will see that shortcut there. Right
click that shortcut and select Properties. Put the following path in the
Target line.

C:\Users\cstark\Documents

Apply / OK.

Thanks for your help. I put my cursor over the Start button, and right
click, then go to Explore. That is how I open an explore window.

I do not know how to find that shortcut. As I showed below, I went to the
C:\ drive and did a search for "windows explorer", it returned a list of
shortcuts on the C:\ drive (including Internet Explorer), I highlighted
"Windows Explorer" shortcut, opened "Properties", then opened the "Shortcut"
tab. In the field marked "Target", I placed "C:\Users\cstark\Documents"
(without the quotes) and hit "Apply".

The short cut that I altered is the only one that showed on the search. It
is located in the folder
"C:\Users\cstark\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows \Start Menu\Programs".

Is there another shortcut somewhere that I can't see? Is the "real"
shortcut named something different?

When you right click the start button and select Explore, this just takes
you to the folder that contains the shortcuts that are on the start menu.

If you click the Start Button, do you see All Programs right above the
button? If so, click All Programs. This will expand the menu. Now, you
should see a folder called Accessories, click that folder and it will
expand.

In Accessories, you should a shortcut called Windows Explorer, RIGHT CLICK
that shortcut and in the pop up menu, click the "Pin to start menu" option.

This will place the Windows Explorer shortcut directly on the start menu.
Close the Start Menu and then open it again, on the left side you should see
the WE shortcut. Right click that shortcut and place the following path in
the Target Line.

C:\Users\cstark\Documents

Click Apply/OK.

When you click that WE shortcut, it should open Windows Explorer with the
focus on your Documents folder.
