'Open file' icon locks up Word

I downloaded and installed the April security updates for XP. When I tried
to open a file in Word 2002 using the "Open file" icon, Word locked up and I
had to end the program. When I chose File..Open from the menu bar, the same
thing happened. I could still open files by going to My Files an double
clicking a filename.

I did a system restore to a time prior to the installation of the security
updates and Word works fine. So, is there a problem with the security
updates that is causing this?

I am having the same problem with multiple machines. Machines patched with
April patches Word locks up and i have to end task. Machines not updated are
working fine. If i patch the machine, Word then begins to lock up.

After reading your note I checked and my Word 2003 was also freezing when I
tried to use "File Open". I removed all the April updates and everything's
fine. I don't see any other solution right now.

I have done some testing and if i remove the MS06-14 (911562) patch Word no
longer locks up.

Are you sure it's MS06-04 and not MS06-015? If I removed MS06-015, word
works fine..

It is MS06-015. I guess when i uninstalled the ms06-014 (not 04) the exe
causing the problems was not running. I found this on a news group.

No problem with my Word 2002 after the updates

Which update is the MS06-015? the numbers I show are KB911567,
KB908531, KB912812, KB911562, KB911565.. I did a system restore and got rid
of all of them but if you could point to the problem causer I could do just
the ones that won't make my Office software lock up..

There is a problem - Microsoft says that there is a conflict between KB908531
and various anti-virus programs. I was told to remove the program (done via
add/remove programs form Control Panel) and not to update until Microsoft
post a patch to fix the problem.
