Open File Not Responding

Since my last windows update - yesterday - I've had problems. When I opened
Word and then Excel a message appeared each time saying it was configuring XP
Professional. Then, when I used the open file icon - in both programs- I
keep getting an error message that the open file porgram is not responding.
Also, I can't attach files to email. Very annoying. Anyone with the same
problem or suggestions, I'd love to hear from you.

You may experience problems in Windows Explorer or in the Windows shell
after you install security update MS06-015

There may be more than one problem you ran into, but one of those
looks like KB908531 and its traps.

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install
security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165/en-us
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-015

Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution
(908531)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-015.mspx

For those who have Hewlett Packard's Share to Web Software, there
are two registry patches to choose from (run either one or the
other) not both:

I've made a "patch" back on Saturday available at:
http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads...are-To-Web.zip
(Note this is a Zip file and will need to be extracted. It contains
a REG file which needs to be imported into the registry via double
clicking the contained REG file. You may have to reboot Windows
afterwards.)

or

Kelly has made a patch with exact same functionality available at:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line #383 - this is a vbs file and instructions on how to use such
files are at the top of the page.

If you're using a Nvidia video card, you may want to update the driver
for that card: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

In case you're running a Kerio firewall software, please reread
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165/en-us cloesly.

Freudi

I have had similar problems, plus some of the following:
When using Windows Explorer, when I click on a "+" in the left window to
expand the sub-folder list, the machine hangs.
I can only access files in lower level sub-folders by using the "Find File"
utility and double-clicking on the file.
My Norton Security program will not open completely. I get the outline shape
of their home page, but none of the options or links. The program hangs. (I
can do a scan using Norton's Internet site, but it takes an extremely long
time, even with a cable connection).
In all of the above cases, I must use "Task Manager" to get out of the "not
reponding" condition.
I would hope that MS would address these issues an issue corrective updates,
otherwise we can no longer trust them to automatically update. By the way, a
number of my friends are having similar problems.

Nope, just read on what has been posted more than 100 times in the
last 5 days:

Both of the above mentioned "patches" for the KB908531 *do not*
work for Windows 2000. See the MSKB article 918165 for details.

out of about 400 systems, we only had this problem with about 10 machines.
Of those 10 machines, rebooting about 4 consecutive times fixed the problem
on its own. Only 1 machine did I have to follow the directions to edit the
registry on this. I know you probably did already, but reboot a couple more
times and they try the registry fix if you are still having problems...

Good luck,
Mike

I very much appreciate your help and, if I can summon up the courage to play
around with the Registry, I may try to fix it myself.

But I believe that MS should carry the responsibility of updating since so
very many people are affected. Otherwise, the use of automated updating poses
a danger (as does not updating at all). I am a retired Professor of Computer
Science (primarily a teacher of computer languages for 44 years and NOT one
of either hardware or operating systems) and I dred the thought of having to
delve into the extremely sensitive registry. Imagine how some of my less
experienced fellow retirees feel! In fact, I wouldn't dare mention to any of
them that I know how to correct the problem; if I did, my telephone would
never stop ringing! I have no desire to spend my "golden years" correcting
MS's bugs!

Thanks again,
Mike, who yearns for the good old days of paper tape and punch cards!
(Kidding, of course.)

Well, I'm somewhat common with editing the registry if neccessary -
but never ever without exporting the registry or the keys to be
changed respectively

Anyway, you're correct that this humbling shouldn't be neccessary
for users after applying *any* update/patch provided by Microsoft.
But a fix from MS provided via WU/MU/AU will take some time, if
they are releasing any though.

Bye,
Freudi

I too have had the same problem. Every Microsoft Office product I try to
use, I have the same problem after the updates. I have deleted them three
times now and after each delete, the problems have gone away. Microsoft,
wake up, fix these problems!
