Open/Save/Save As dialogue shortcuts

Right then, here's a question for you.

In an application when you select Open, Save or Save As, it displays a
pretty standard dialogue window with the short cut icons of:
Recent Places, Desktop, "User name", Computer and Network, down the left
hand side.
Is there a way of customising this IE. Add other shortcuts on there?

Yes, easily done. You can drag and drop folders there from the right pane.
You can also right-click one and choose 'Remove link'.

You seem to have the older 'XP style' common dialog box there, including the
up arrow etc.
Unless it's an older application, I don't know why yours is appearing that
way.

The newer 'Vista style' common dialog box allows the customization I
mentioned.

I see what you mean.

I've just tried it in Word 2007 and see how you can customise it. The
application I was using were things like Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash.
Do you think there is a way of customising them? Maybe within the registry
or something like that?

It may be possible, depending on the application. The common dialogs
normally live within the file comdlg32.ocx, in the system32 directory, but
the applications may have brought along their own 'customized' versions.

So if any of the 'Program Files' directories for those applications contain
another version of that file comdlg32.ocx, eg in one of their
subdirectories, then you could try deleting it or replacing it with the one
from your system32 directory. Make backups of any exisiting files, if you
try that so you can reverse the process if it doesn't work.

Thanks Jon. Think this might be a non-starter because there are no .ocx
files in any of my application directories or sub-directories.

TweakUI for Vista should deal with that, if it's anything like the previous
few versions (if it comes out).

Thanks dude. I did find a 3rd party company doing something called TweakVI
which sounded similar to TweakUI, but after reading some of the earlier
comments on this group about it decided not to load it. Sounds a bit dodgy
and adware riddled to me. I'll sit tight and wait and see it MS bring out a
TweakUI for Vista.

According to SoftPedia it is free of adware, malware, viruses, etc..
As far as how effective the tweaking is I'm not sure but I have heard
that Vista does the Internet tweaking automatically for you. If I
reinstall it on this machine I don't think I will use that section.
