"open your email inbox" button opens in new window not tab.

Initially when i got my computer I would click the "open your email inbox"
button in windows live messenger 2008 and it would open in a new tab. since
then it began to open in a new window. I do not know what caused this. but it
is only with the mail button. when i click help topics under help for
example, in opens in a new tab, in the current window. wtf? someone help?
this is an annoying glitch. IE7 tab settings not the problem. already
checked.

How? I believe that Messenger always opens your mailbox in IE no
matter what.
