Trying to open a pdf file (from email attachment) triggers Windows Media
Center to open.
I don't know how to view a pdf file in the Media Center so I have to save
the attachment, then use "open with" option to choose Adobe Reader 8.1 (which
I have). Attachments are clearly ".pdf" files and open to Adobe reader on
computer with Windows XP.

How can I have my computer associate pdf files with Adobe Reader and not
Windows Media Center?

You can try this

Start > Default Programs > Select Associate a file type or protocol with a
program > Locate and double click on .pdf > Verify if Adobe Reader is visible
if not

Click on Browse > Navigate to C:\program files\adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader >
double click on AcroRD32.exe > Upon doing so look at the bottom of the Open
With Window > Ensure that Always use the selected program to open this kind
of file is ticked > click ok and retry again.

Hope this helps.
