Hi,

I've had big problems (as have others) with Update KB896688. Now Microsoft
tech support suggests I download the KB896688 file (which I have done) and
then install it in Safe Mode. Does anybody have a reasoned idea as to
whether that will make a difference? I'd rather have some assurance before
running into the same issues with embedded media and not being able to
access the Window Update page at all.......which is what happens when I
install the update directly from the WU scan and install page.

Thank you,

Marcus

It may have since a lot of programs and services loaded in normal
mode while starting Windows won't be loaded in Safe Mode.

Could you please provide further details _what_ problems you ran
into? Does the installation itself fail or do you have issues after
an successful installation?

If the installation is successful but you run into some ActiveX
and similar problems, give the following a shot:

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here (it is a registry file
that origin from MS Support, and it has fixed the ActiveX problem
for several people, getting this problem after installing KB896688):

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

See also the new released KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909738
which is referred to *now* in the revised Security Bulletin 05-052.

Freudi
