trying to upgrade from 98se to xp I get - "language of this installation of
windows differs from the one you are installing. The option to upgrage will
not be available."
Next message tells me " setup cannot continue because upgrade functionality
is disabled and your copy of XP only allows upgrades."

any clues much appreciated

What language Win 98 is installed? what language Win XP are you trying to
install?

You can only upgrade OS's with the same language as already installed.
You could back up the data and then try a clean install (leaving the
original in place when booting from the XP CD) - it may 'take', and you'd
have a nice clean system to play with!<g>

Oh - and BTW - this newsgroup is for Windows Update problems, rather than
upgrading issues - you should probably go to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.setup_deployment
for a more detailed (and better-informed!) response.
