Automatic updates are turned off. I get an alert from Norton 2006 saying that
1 item is affecting my status. It says that automatic updates are set to
notify. So I click "fix" but it just goes back to saying that 1 item is
affecting status. I did this over and over. So i went into windows security
center and it said that automatic updates are off . There is a button under
that that says "turn on automatic updates" but when I click it an alert comes
up that says "we're sorry, but security center was unable to change your
automatic updates settings." So i went in to the control panel and went to
automatic updates options, and all of the options are GRAYED OUT. I am on an
administrator account and am using windows xp home edition service pack 2.

In addition to Patti Macleod's suggestion:

1. Check the Service Manager for "Automatic Update" service
Click Start, select Run and type: Services.msc
Press Enter
Locate the - "Automatic Update"
Make sure the service is not disabled and started.

2. If the service is disabled and cannot be started:

Go to START, Select RUN
Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Press Ok

3. Additional information

Automatic Updates options are grayed out?:
