Order of patches to fix svchost problem

In reading this newsgroup, and, the Internet, I've seen that some solutions
advocate Client 3.0 first, then the patch, and other solutions reverse that
order. Which is right, or, does it matter?

Also, I have seen, on my own computers (have 2200 of them to look at), where
it has be a requirement to DISABLE the Automatic Updates and BITS Services,
then reboot the computer so that they come up stopped, rather than just stop
them.

Finally, on most, I've had to delete c:\windows\softwaredistribution.

So, I've kinda come up with this plan:

1. Disable AU and BITS Services, reboot.
2. RD c:\windows\softwaredistribution
3. Install Client 3.0, using /wuforce /norestart
4. Install Patch V3+ using /norestart
5. Set AU and BITS Services back to Automatic, reboot

I'm going to try and set this up in SMS, so that I can do all my computers.

Any major flaw in this plan--especially in the order of the installs?

Thanks!

The two updates have no dependencies on each other, so any order should
work. However, the UpdateAgent will not install if Automatic Updates is
running in the background on 100% CPU and will not respond quickly to STOP
requests. That situation can be ameliorated by getting 927891 installed and
the system restarted, as that seems to cure some of the problems.

Yes, that's presumably because with Automatic Updates taking 100% of CPU,
you can't get a STOP request through to them.

That's a shame as you lose all update history. Do you still need to do this
after you have got the two fixes in and operational?

Bill,

Your plan worked perfectly for me. I plan on installing on every customer
experiencing issues.
