I just had to restore XP Home from the Recovery Partition and now have to
reinstall SP1, SP2 and all the security updates. First, what's the approved
order? I suspect SP1, SP2 and then everything else, or at least those since
SP2.

Second, how do I get Microsoft Update to realize I don't really have all the
updates it thinks I have? Do I get to delete a lot of files in the Windows
directory and/or Remove fixes?

Thanks in advance.

SP2 has all the stuff included in SP1 so don't bother with SP1.

Go here http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showforum=89 and download the
latest AutoPatcher for XP - it should have everyhting else - except for
items released after the AutoPatcher release.

Hi Bob
I would recommend/advice, as others have, that when it comes to MS updates,
you get them from MS, only.
You can still get the free disk for SP2(icludes SP1)here, which would be my
favoured choice

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx

OR - download the whole update package from here

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...splaylang=enor

Other useful items to read etc first
SP2 :Service Pack Installation Checklist
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htmWindows

Forums (cleanup after SP2 install)
http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php...=asc&highlight

If you download the SP2 from MS, create a folder, named for eg SP2 - save
the download to desktop - Move WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe to the newly
created SP2 folder.
Run from there.
Or download to CD/DVD if you wish.

Also I would read other threads re SP2 in this group to get some idea of the
problems/resolutions that others have recently had with the SP2 update.

Don't forget that there are some 50-60 or more security.critical updates
after you have installed SP2
I would not try and install all in one go, but four or five at a time, and
in the order given, after checking that are relevant for you system. These
should of course include WGA/WGAN that home-grown bit of spyware from MS.
I wish you every success in this venture.
But do take your time over this upgrade/update.
Acknowledgement to Mow Green for some of the above info.
Rgds

OE did that after the link - it's complete deletion of the OD OA hex for
carriage-return and line-feed. Yes, that would be the enter key. He's
missing spaces only where CR LF would have started a new line.

I don't know why OE did that to me for a while or why it stopped.
When it happened, it effected all text which followed the http://etc.

Sorry PA et al
I can assure you that the
spacebarandenterkeyarebothworkingfineasyoucanclear lysee.
The problem was too many brandies before bed, fingers engaging before brain
and a lack of eye/hand co-ordination in selecting 'file' instead of 'send'
I was trying to put together all matters concerning SP1 to SP2 for a
neighbour who needs to upgrade this coming weekend.
I wondered where it had gone? along with another I fear.
Thanks for the pointer
