One feature that I had hoped Microsoft would have included in vista is the
ability to re-order the task bar buttons so that you don't have to open your
applications in a certain order to be able to have them display in your
desired order.

This was suggested several times during Beta testing.
It never happened :-(

Huh?

Huh? again

Do you mean the quicklaunch buttons, the notification area icons, or open
app buttons?

What does order of buttons on the bar have to do with the order you open any
apps?

Quicklaunch buttons can be easily rearanged, just click and drag them.

Please clarify your question.

Arrange your task bar buttons:
Task Bar Shuffle

Quicklaunch - set it up once and you're done:
Free Launch Bar (made for XP, but works fine in Vista too)

Nice one. I actually downloaded an application a while ago which did
something similar but it was unreliable. This one works great. Thanks.
