Ordinal 481 not found in dynamic library iertutil.dll plus ....

Whenever I click on the IE7 icon on my desktop, all I get is another shortcut
on my desktop. If I right click, I get "create shortcut", "delete", "rename"
and "properties". If I click on properties, I get "rundll32.exe-Ordinal not
found- The ordinal 481 could not be located in the dynamic link library
iertutil.dll". The same message appears when I open many other programs.

I've tried reinstalling IE7 and even installing IE8 but nothing happens. I
can't open IE from the quick launch, the start menu or even the icon in the
program files folder. I can't even access IE options through Internet
Options in Control Panel or using Inetcpl.cpl in the Run menu.

Please help and thank you!

I'll assume you're running WinXP SP2 or SP3 here *and* that you've
uninstalled IE8 RC1:

You may have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7. I suggest that
you...

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html [Only use the Command
%windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe if you cannot uninstall via Add/Remove
Programs!]

2a. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds).

2b. Disable all Norton Add-ons, if applicable.

3. Reinstall IE7 EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install <= Steps #1-8, #10 &
#11; take note of #12, then STOP!

NB: Use http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Or Direct Download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-081805b2f90b

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

4. IMMEDIATELY go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any
critical updates offered. If a "Root Certificates" update is listed in the
Optional category, install it to take full advantage of IE7's additional
security.

Thank you so much, PA Bear for answering so quickly.

Yes, and sorry, I'm running WinXP SP3 and I did uninstall IE8. I then
uninstalled each of the IE7 updates (after uninstalling the first two I got a
more normal right-click menu and was able to access Internet Options through
the Control Panel but still IE7 wouldn't open even without add-ons).
Finally, I uninstalled IE7 and was able to open up IE6 and browse with it.

I then tried re-installing IE7 and it immediately added two security
updates. I tried the icon, start menu, etc. but was unable to open it. So,
I uninstalled the updates again, uninstalled IE7 and am now using IE6.

Would you suggest just staying with IE6 until a proven version of IE8 comes
out (this isn't the first big problem I've had with IE7) or trying to install
IE7 from other locations? I actually used the direct link
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-081805b2f90b) to install last time.

You did not follow the exact instructions I posted in my previous reply.
Try installing IE7 again per the following.

Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= Steps #1-8, #10 & #11; take note of #12, then
STOP!
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install
(ignore any references to Vista)

And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Alternately, use this Direct Download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-081805b2f90b

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
installing IE7 and install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

Sorry PA Bear, I dropped the ball even with all your help. Tomorrow I will
follow your instructions to the letter and post my results. Thank you for
your patience.

I have pretty much the same problem, except it's ordinal 169 that is missing.
I followed these instructions to the letter, with no joy.

First, I can't run explorer at all, so I have to run Firefox (thank God
there are alternatives), the Windows update doesn't work.

After following your direct link, I download and run the install. It
appears to be installing fine, but I end up with

"Set up couldn't verify the integrity of the file update. Make sure the
Cryptographic service is running on this computer."

Unfortunately, I just have the background showing, there is no start bar or
anyway for me to get to the control panel to check this service.

Any suggestions? I don't want to reinstall yet again. How have microsoft
got away with releasing such a flawed product without releasing a specific
fix for this?

And you're reply to...?

Please begin a new thread about /your/ problem instead of hijacking someone
else's. Thanks.

Thank you for your extremely unhelpful response for virtually the same
problem being experienced by merrysea.

I'm not what you would call a novice when it comes to computers, nor in
managing forums, being the admin on 3 gaming forums.

I posted because the problem was so similar and because your advice didn't
work. This problem is being posted all over the place. MS released a broken
piece of software(IE7)and should create the appropriate downloadable
fixwithout the need to have a degree in computer science to fix it, or to be
patronised by the likes of you.

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.

To avoid confusion, always begin a new thread about your problem, no matter
how similar it may appear to someone else's.

PS: Millions have been running IE7 for years now without getting any errors.

Well, I followed the instructions to the letter (I really had done almost
everything the first time) and when IE7 is installed, it will not open - with
or without add ons. You can open the internet options through Control Panel
but the browser refuses to open and there are no error messages either. I
tried doing a Windows Update to see if it would force the browser to open but
to no avail. I've even tried different installations of IE7 but the results
are the same. IE6 seems to work perfectly, though.

Could this have something to do with the "ordinal 481" that was missing
before? Why would IE6 work and not IE7? When I started with this problem
IE8 wouldn't work either so am I stuck with an almost obsolete browser now?
This really bothers me because more and more websites/programs are no longer
supporting IE6.

Any suggestions?
