Was IE7 ever working properly on this WinXP SP3 machine or did this problem
start immediately after your first install of IE7?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed and/or uninstalled IE7 and/or IE8 Beta
and/or SP3?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

I installed IE7 as soon as it came out and it worked beautifully. I did,
however, have an incident when I couldn't open it (just like this time but
with no error messages whatsoever) a few months ago and at the time, I
couldn't even uninstall it. I came here and also looked elsewhere and the
result was to uninstall IE7. The problem was that I had to uninstall SP2
(didn't have SP3 at the time) before I could uninstall IE7. I uninstalled
SP2, uninstalled each of the many updates to IE7, then uninstalled IE7. When
I saw that IE6 worked, I then reinstalled SP2 first then IE7 and then the
updates. A couple of months ago, I installed SP3 and still everything worked
fine until the day I first contacted you. Do you think uninstalling SP3
would help at all?

I'm using Norton Internet Security (Firewall, anti-virus, etc.) but the
subscription ran out about 2 or so months ago. I'm afraid that I've been
looking for a better deal than renewing it online. I also have Norton
Password Manager which I have to admit acts strangely at times. Sometimes,
when I install a new program or open a program, Norton Password Manager tries
to install itself again (even though it's already installed) and I have to
manually cancel it.

I turned off the Windows firewall because it was having conflicts with
Norton.

I've been disabling Norton when re-installing IE7 as you mentioned but, to
tell you the truth, I'm not sure if I had it on or not when I originally
installed and uninstalled IE7 and IE8 Beta or SP3.

Do you think Norton is interfering?

To install IE7, you must be running WinXP SP2 or SP3, so it's not possible
that you had to uninstall SP2 before you could uninstall IE7.

The above notwithstanding...

No, I think you're seeing the affects of a maassive hijackware infection
because you've not had a valid & active anti-virus application installed for
several months. And if you didn't disable the Norton Firewall and then
enabled the Windows Firewall, you probably were running without a valid
firewall for several months, too.

In short, this machine should NOT be connected to the internet or any
networks in its current state.

The best way to make things right again is to format & do a clean install of
Windows. No, a Repair Install will not help.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and

A good tech will charge you about $150US or so to do all this for you.

Good luck!

Thank you so much, PA Bear for answering so quickly.

Yes, and sorry, I'm running WinXP SP3 and I did uninstall IE8. I then
uninstalled each of the IE7 updates (after uninstalling the first two I got a
more normal right-click menu and was able to access Internet Options through
the Control Panel but still IE7 wouldn't open even without add-ons).
Finally, I uninstalled IE7 and was able to open up IE6 and browse with it.

I then tried re-installing IE7 and it immediately added two security
updates. I tried the icon, start menu, etc. but was unable to open it. So,
I uninstalled the updates again, uninstalled IE7 and am now using IE6

Would you suggest just staying with IE6 until a proven version of IE8 comes
out (this isn't the first big problem I've had with IE7) or trying to install
IE7 from other locations? I actually used the direct link
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-081805b2f90b) to install last time

You may have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7. I suggest that
you..

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html [Only use the Command
%windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe if you cannot uninstall via Add/Remove
Programs!

2a. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds)

2b. Disable all Norton Add-ons, if applicable

3. Reinstall IE7 EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install <= Steps #1-8, #10 &

NB: Use http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update

Or Direct Download link:

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it

4. IMMEDIATELY go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any
critical updates offered. If a "Root Certificates" update is listed in the
Optional category, install it to take full advantage of IE7's additional
security

Try installing IE7 again per the following.

Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

(ignore any references to Vista)

And I strongly recommend using

Alternately, use this Direct Download link:

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after

to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

I followed these instructions to the letter, with no joy.

First, I can't run explorer at all, so I have to run Firefox (thank God
there are alternatives), the Windows update doesn't work.

After following your direct link, I download and run the install. It
appears to be installing fine, but I end up with

"Set up couldn't verify the integrity of the file update. Make sure the
Cryptographic service is running on this computer."

Unfortunately, I just have the background showing, there is no start bar or
anyway for me to get to the control panel to check this service.

Any suggestions? I don't want to reinstall yet again. How have microsoft
got away with releasing such a flawed product without releasing a specific
fix for this?

Hi,

And the rest of the error message says?

It should tell you the name of a file that tells us what module is at fault.

Please include your OS version, Service Pack level and IE version and FULL
details of any error messages that you receive when posting a question.

Regards.
