OS/C Drive error-checking trouble

When I try to check my hard drive for errors (right-click OS/C, properties,
tools, check now, start), I always get a message:

"Windows can't check the disk while it's in use.
Do you want to check for hard-disk errors the next time you start your
computer?"

I then have an option to click "schedule disk check".

When I check it, nothing happens.

Why is this happening, and how can I check my disc for errors?
I never had this problem with Windows XP.

You have to reboot and chkdsk will run.

Dave,
That's part of the problem. When I re-boot it does NOT RUN automatically,
and if I try to do it manually again, I get the same error message.

Unless when I re-boot it runs in the background, so I just don't realize that
it's running?
Is that how error-checking works?

Try opening a command prompt as Administrator, and run chkdsk manually...
Start - All Programs - Accessories - right-click on Command Prompt, select
Run as Administrator
(UAC - Continue)
type chkdsk c: /f /r

I have tried the steps mentioned and I too get the same message and can not
run or can not tell if check disk has completed the process.
